Hurricane Milton Leaves 2.8 Million Without Power as 120mph Winds Ravage Florida
In excess of 2.8m residents are left in the dark following the devastation brought by Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 hurricane which hit the Florida Gulf Coast with an average wind speed of 120mph. The hurricane hit Wednesday night in Siesta Key near Sarasota, some 70 miles south of Tampa. Even though the storm did not directly hit Tampa, the after effects have caused havoc in most states.
The outskirts of St. Petersburg, Tampa, has not been spared with an average of over 16 inches (41 cm) of rainfall. The National Weather Service says flash flood warnings are in effect for the area, as well as other parts of western and central Florida. This is still the case, and operations still continue in an effort to provide the needed rescue and to establish the extent of the damage.
Among all sports venues, Tropicana Field that is affiliated to Tampa Bay Rays baseball team was badly affected. The high velocity winds caused its fabric roof to be torn through and it remains uncertain if the inside of the stadium also has suffered impacts; however the disaster has affected at least four cranes on site nearby.
Hurricane Milton affects an area only two weeks after Floria was hit by Hurricane Helene threatening its recovery activities to this date. Scattered tornadoes that the storm unleashed have inflicted some losses to coastal communities, while Tampa was missed by a whisker after the storm track shifted southward in its last phase.
Aside from power blackouts, St. Petersburg citizens are dealing with the water shortage after a water pipe burst and the authorities had to turn off the tap water supply. Millions of people remain without power, while emergency services are overloaded, and the process of rebuilding after Hurricane Milton will take time in Florida.
